《Knowing》-

Nic Cage

Pierre

the "list" is not meant to save the world, but meant to be years later "discovered" by Cage so as to save "him" from the despair and help him understand what he was taught from his father(a pastor) since he was a child about religion is true. that's why the last line Cage said was "I know!" the whole movie is describing the process of Cage's KNOWING of this truth (well, here for example, the bible predicts the earth will be ended one day, and it will be ended by fire, before that happens, chosen people who accept the calling will be taken away in advance... these are accurate predictions in the bible).

"You know, I completely agree with everything said about the ????? of Lucinda's role.
However, I am starting to wonder if all of these questions come up because they focus too much on Lucinda as being the "star" of this story.
While Cage was not "the prophet,"

I believe the story is meant to use Lucinda to change Cage's life.

As you will notice, everyone is dying with no conviction or purpose. Cage is the only one who gets to settle the score. He gets to talk to his father. He gets to say goodbye to his kid. He is the one who begins to believe again.

The fact that his wife's death was on that list is also not a coincidence. The whole backstory was meant to show that some people respond to what they see (Cage) and others, don't want to believe things even when they are staring them in the face (his colleague/friend).

Despite the SciFi scenario, this is actually a very good representation of how people view the question of faith. Cage's family believe absolutely, respect the prophets. Cage believes whatever is "proven"... and Cage's colleague, he can't believe in anything that takes a leap of faith or seems to go against what he believes in.

These kinds of people are also spread amongst religion and science. (Some) religious people also believe that science isn't as important or relevant, and there are people who obsess about science, and think that they're the center of the universe, with no thought of anyone "beyond" them. In essence, I think it shows that to see one side without the other is blindness.

The movie is showing how these two fields of study are really different interpretations of the same thing. Cage, raised religious, grew into the scientist. He is the one who ultimately understands.

Lucinda is the catalyst that changes his life. In this way, however, the question then becomes... is the end of the world itself all so awful, or is it merely our perception of it? Cage's father is accepting of his demise, whereas Diana is not at all. The one leg up that religion has over science is its ability to comfort.

Additionally Lucinda is the plot device (weakly done as it was) that allows him to understand his son. He knows what has happened in order to know what will happen. Lucinda is how Cage understands Caleb. (such as scratching at the wood)
